Bronze Annual Papal Medal – Year 5 2017 – Pope Francis Pontificate

The official annual medal for Year V (2017) of Pope Francis’s pontificate, struck in bronze by the Italian State Mint for the Vatican numismatic office. Only 1,500 were issued — far fewer than the usual 4,000 — making this a scarce year for collectors.

• Size: Diameter 44 mm (1,73 inch); weight 40 gr
• Material: Bronze
• Design: Front FRANCISCUS P.P. ANNO V MMXVII; reverse “HOSPES ERAM ET COLLEGISTIS ME” (Mt 25,35)
• Edition: 1,500 medals, each numbered on the edge to match its certificate
• Certificate: Guarantee certificate stamped by the Vatican Secretariat of State and the Italian State Mint
• Shipping: Ships from Rome, Italy

The reverse takes its motto from Matthew 25 — “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” — rendered as a scene of welcome by the shore. Annual papal medals are the Vatican’s own year-by-year record of each pontificate.
