Flower and Bird Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Magpie Plum Blossom

There is nothing fussy about this scroll: a flower-and-bird scene, honest brushwork, and room to breathe. Your eye goes to the bird before anything else — the blossoms and leaves play a graceful supporting part. Look closer and you'll pick out magpie, plum blossom and colorful gongbi — each stroke placed with intent.

Done in colorful gongbi, this flower-and-bird piece sits well beside antiques — kindred, not copied. Beyond the looks, there is meaning: plum blossom opens in the cold, the emblem of perseverance. The coloring is lively, varied color, in the mineral-pigment manner that ages gracefully. Spring is in the air here — new shoots, birds coming back, blossom on the branch. The elongated shape invites a slow look; it reads like a walk through the scene rather than a quick photo.

This kind of bird-and-blossom painting brings a composed, literati feeling to a space. Find it a patch of wall with decent light and step back; the scroll takes care of the rest.
