Flower and Bird Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Porcelain Inkstone

There is nothing fussy about this scroll: a flower-and-bird scene, honest brushwork, and room to breathe. Bird-and-blossom has long been a beloved subject, and here you see why — it carries the entire composition. From a distance it's one image; up close it's orchid, chrysanthemum and vase, each worth a look on its own.

Confident washes and varied, animated lines give it the rhythm of a brush that never second-guessed itself. The symbolism is part of the pleasure: the chrysanthemum is autumn's flower — reclusion, integrity and long life. Autumn runs through it — ripe color, clear air, the year turning, and the scroll knows it. It sits naturally in the vertical format; your eye travels down the silk the way the painter planned.

A frameless hanging scroll in the classic style — give it a wall and it becomes the room's calm center. A single nail and a quiet stretch of wall are all it asks for. It is a fine example of orchid and chrysanthemum Chinese painting, the kind of piece that grows on you.
